Pascal’s latest project has been a mix of many things – custom carpentry, kitchen design, remodeling, cabinet refinishing, and other updates to a home in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
The kitchen renovation was by far the most dramatic part of this project. What was a cramped area cut off from the rest of the downstairs living areas is now an open, modern floor plan with lot of storage, modern appliances, and a large custom-designed prep area surrounded by an elevated eating area that provides plenty of space for entertaining while connecting the kitchen to the living room/entry way and the back deck.
Originally the kitchen was cut-off from the rest of the downstairs. The main entry to the kitchen was from the small hallway leading to the garage.
The wall also contained the plumbing stack and an air return so removing it completely was not an option.
Instead, Pascal re-worked the kitchen to put the built in fridge next to the plumbing/hvac and removed the rest of the wall to make way to the new food prep/eating area.
By removing the wall the kitchen is now accessible from the main living space on the first floor.
The built-in fridge is positioned next to the plumbing/hvac stack. The “cabinet” surrounding the fridge also contains storage above and room to wire in a flat-screen TV and TiVo (all wiring is concealed inside the fridge cabinet).
The curved workspace next to the fridge has a full 24 inch counter top and includes an under-counter Dacor microwave and winecooler.
Pascal designed and built the “picture frame” trim on the back side of the eating area to match other black and cream woodwork throughout the home.
The black framing on the eating area provides a dramatic contrast to the pickled wood flooring and cream kitchen cabinets.
The 18 inch elevated eating area is secured with seven stainless steel brackets.
The elevated eating area provides a comfortable 14″ overhang to allow up to eight adults to comfortably sit at the bar.
Kitchen includes stainless steel Bosch dishwasher and electric oven/range. Unique Shade Wall hood by Zephyr.
In addition to the traditional overhead kitchen light fixture, this design also has recessed LED fixtures above the eating area and under-cabinet LED lighting throughout the entire kitchen.
Long run of uninterrupted counter top work space and deep storage drawers.
The new open design of the kitchen allows the family to socialize while preparing and enjoying meals.
